Mia and the Moon

By Bemi (Founder Mor Music Group)

This week, I got a chance to interview Mia and the Moon - two amazingly talented female musicians.

1. Who are Mia and the Moon? There has got to be an interesting story behind the band name – I bet our blog readers would love to hear it.
Mia and the moon are two sisters who sang together through childhood, influenced by jam sessions at various bluegrass/folk festivals they attended with their parents. Later down the line, Laura took a shine to the cruise ship lifestyle accepting show contracts for the likes of P&O and Sebourne, meanwhile Mary-Anne remained a home-bound songwriter, fronting rock bands and collaborating with various DJ's and producers such as Paul Vinitsky, Benjamin Bates and Marco V.

The name of our band was inspired by the moon being frequently observed next to the old Russian space-station 'Mir' (we changed the spelling for the sake of aesthetic pleasure). People often ask 'who's Mia and who's the moon?' The truth is neither are either but if there had to be an answer; Laura's feminine dress sense and affinity with the ocean would make her the moon, while star gazer Mary-Anne reflects the masculine qualities of Mir in the form of kung fu, car washing and setting up heavy PA equipment, while Laura decorates the stage with flowers and candles!

2. What would be the best description of your music genre?
Our genre is quite non-specific as we hop between the likes of jazz, folk, rock, reggae, RnB and pop compositions, influenced by gospel roots, the beauty of classical music and the simplicity of country songs. But think Norah Jones, Sarah Mclachlan, Emilie Sande and Florence - you're on the right lines (basically singer/song-writer, I suppose).

3. You have loads of fans (over 1000 on Facebook, and over 70 people talking about you – week of  April 1, 2014). How do you manage to keep your fans engaged on social media?
We're extremely grateful to our fanbase on our social media sites and in the real world for their endless support and feedback. We like to keep people entertained with little 'behind the scenes' snippets of our actual lives, and the things we love in addition to just plugging gigs and music.

4. Do you have any music coming out soon?
Following the release of our second single 'Midnight in London' we're very excited about the release of our debut album and hope to cement a launch date this summer.

5. Any major gigs lined up for 2014?
Our festival feature at Lechlade (May 24th), Riverside (June 7th), and Deerstock (July 27th). Plus headline support at Barefoot (July 25th), and an actual headline at The South Gloucester Show (August 2nd)!

We will also be supporting the amazing Maia at The Musician (Leicester) on April 2nd, and showing another kind of support for Jerry Green Dog Rescue on August 16th, performing for their fund-raiser event in Lincolnshire.

6. Do you have any message for you fans out there?
We'd like to say another REALLY BIG THANK YOU to all the lovely people who listen to, share and enjoy our music. Your support makes our hard work worth while, and never be disillusioned by ideas of glitz and glamour because if there's one thing we've learnt from our own experience and talking to other bands, it's that whether you're touring the world with a best-selling album, or trying for that perfect studio take, it's always, always, always hard work! But we're truly grateful for everyday we get to spend living the dream... It's the fans that make it possible. Please keep making noise so that we can!

  1. This band are fantastic... well worth a listen. Have you ever tried writing lyrics? To do so and then write the music also, requires a certain something which few of us have. When someone else's lyrics make you cry, then you know you've found someone special.
