I recently got a chance to interview a young talented producer. I must confess he's the youngest producer I've ever met. The first time I heard about him, I thought he was just a young teenager experimenting with music in his bedroom. Little did I realize he was already an up-and-coming player in the music industry (his music has been featured on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1xtra). After listening to his body of work, I was pretty impressed by this precocious young producer, and decided to feature him on this blog.
I requested a picture for this blog feature, and he sent me the picture above. I have to commend him, as he is all about the music, and less focused on getting his face out there (in a quest for popularity). In a time where 'selfies' are the rave of the moment, here's an artist you don't get to meet everyday.
Below is my interview with 16 year old New Walk:
1. First of all your age – 16 ? Your Facebook page started in 2012, which means you’ve been active In the music industry since you were 14 years old? Could you give us a brief summary of how you started out in the music industry?
I started when I was given an old macbook with the programme Logic on it. As soon as I understood how to use the programme, I was and still am on it everyday producing music. I've been playing the piano since I was around 7 and my whole family are musicians so I was introduced to music at a really young age.
I decided to start New Walk when I felt my music was improving and getting more consistent. Things kind of kicked off when one of my tracks was played on Radio 1 and Radio 1xtra and I got a bit of support from some respectable people.
2. Why did you choose New walk as your stagename? Is there any interesting story behind your choice of name?
I just chose to use the name as I liked the sound of it and it's a street in Leicester which kind of represents where I come from. Sorry, there's no deep or philosophical meaning behind it!
3. How would you describe your genre of music?
That's such a difficult question because right now I am making music that varies so much. I guess that it is all electronic music and mostly focuses on interesting chords and melodic ideas. Right now, I'm making a lot of music inspired by hip hop and electronic music.
4. Who are your musical influences?
I'm influenced by loads of different artists. I love rap artists like Kendrick Lamar, Chance The Rapper and Kanye West but then also bands like Radiohead and producers, such as Burial and Mala. I think my favourite two artists though are Stevie Wonder and James Blake. James Blake is such an amazing producer, piano player and singer and I take so much inspiration from him.
5. Do you have any new music coming out soon (single/EP/album)?
Right now I'm getting together an EP that will come out hopefully when it is done, but there's no date as of yet. However on my soundcloud I've recently put up a few remixes and originals that are up for free download so go check them out!
6. Festival season is around the corner – any festival gigs lined up?
Right now I've not got anything lined up but I'm sure I'll be doing some shows here and there. I'm kind of more focused on making music than performing at the moment, but as soon as some new music is out, I'll definitely be doing some shows!
7. Do you have any message for your fans out there?
Thanks for the support, keep an eye out for new music!
