Tapestry is an up and coming band from Leicester, UK. There has been so
much buzz about the band, so I decided to interview the band members.
1. Could you give a brief
introduction of the band members and their role in the band?
We are a three piece band from Leicester, and consist of Elliot Buchanan (Singer and Sax player), Taylor Burton (Keys and Producer) and Alex Ulyett (Drums and Guitar).
2. How did the band come together and how did you pick a band name?
Alex was the one who started the band.He was looking to start a new project and he knew that I (Elliot) wanted to as well so we started producing ideas for what the project could be. We both play in our school soul band which is how we met Taylor, who we only knew to be a great piano player. So we decided to ask him if he'd like to be part of a band that we were starting up. He was up for the idea so we started meeting up and playing music. It was only after that when we found out about his skills as a talented DJ and producer.
It took us weeks and weeks to think of a name, we went through lots and lots of ideas until we finally ended up with Tapestry. We chose 'Tapestry' as, like music, it is a form of art. We took to the idea of creating a contrast between the kind of music we make and the band name itself. As tapestry designs originated hundreds of years ago, before any of the equipment/instruments we use had even been invented, we decided to develop the contrast on this idea. We did this by creating electronic modern music with elements of soul music from the Motown era and many other eras in between.
3. You recently won the heat for Play at LMF, and if all goes well you could be performing to thousands of people alongside big acts like Professor Green, Labrinth and Tinie Tempah. How do you feel about this milestone in your music career?
It's a great achievement for us! It was also very unexpected seen as we have only been together since December 2013 and only been playing shows since March 2014. We are very happy to be part of such a prestigious competition and we enjoy playing in it, so thank you to everyone that has voted!
4. Who are your musical influences and how would you describe your genre of music?
We are mostly influenced by the likes of James Blake and a band called Badbadnotgood. However there are soul influences in the band as well from artists such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Having said this, because we listen to such a wide variety of music there are a lot of influences in the music we create, this makes it difficult to put it in a certain genre. Overall we'd say we are an electronic hip-hop influenced band.
5. Do you have any new music coming out soon (single/EP/album)?
We recently finished our debut EP - 'Change+Time', which we are currently trying to get signed to a label. We have been giving out a few physical copies at our gigs to see if people like it and we have had a lot of people approaching us so we have decided to start selling them for £3. Find us at a gig and grab a copy!
6. Festival season is around the
corner – any festival gigs lined up for Tapestry?
We don't have any as of yet. We do have a lot of gigs planned
though and lots of music to write! We have a chance for some festival
slots - if we make it through to the final of the Original Bands Showcase then
we will be in the running for slots at festivals like Simon Says in Leicester
and also a few others, so fingers crossed.
7. Do you have any message for your fans out there?
We'd like to say thank you for all the support so far and the positive feedback, keep coming to our shows and telling your friends about us. We are very grateful for people taking the time to give their opinions at gigs and especially on social media. Finally we are very excited about the future of the band and can't wait to write more music and play lots of gigs!
