Miley Cyrus and Jess Helt at MTV VMAs On Sunday Night |
A homeless man who picked up Miley Cyrus' gong at the MTV Video Music Awards has a warrant out for his arrest.
Jesse Helt, 22, made headlines around the world when the singer gave him the stage at Sunday's event at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
As he picked up her Video of the Year award, he announced: "Thank y'all, my name is Jesse and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the US who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now.
"I know this because I am one of these people."
It has now emerged that police are looking for Helt, who moved to Los Angeles to find work as a model.
Court records show he was arrested on charges of criminal mischief and criminal trespass in 2010.
An arrest warrant was issued in Oregon in November 2011 after he violated his probation.
As news about the arrest warrant emerged, Cyrus tweeted: "People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included.
"Does looking down upon the homeless help people excuse their inaction?"
Polk County Director of Community Corrections Martin Silbernagel said Helt will be arrested when officers find him.
Jesse Helt's mother, Linda, told reporters on Monday that Cyrus had given her son some money and he was flying home.
But sheriffs did not find him when they visited the house on Tuesday.
