Youth Music Project

Last year, Mor Music Group was asked to help mentor young people at an alternative college in Leicester. In December (2013), Mor Music Group artist Matt R met with tutors (at the alternative college) to discuss volunteering and mentoring the youths studying music production.

Here is Matt R's view on the project:

Matt R is looking forward to more opportunities like this to help mentor young people interested in getting involved in music production.

Takeover Radio’s Mya & Kevin

Our Made in Leicester blog series continues this week with Kevin and Mya who are presenters on Leicester’s Takeover Radio.

Kevin is a producer/co-presenter, and has been quite supportive of Mor Music Group’s artists since we launched in June 2013. Our artists have been featured on Takeover radio, and this has helped promote the artists/record label.

Takeover Radio specialises in training young people (approximately 11 – 15 year olds) who want to get into media. They are trained, expected to come up with an idea for a show, and put in charge of their own show. This is how 12 year old Mya began her young career in media at the radio station.

According to Kevin, the radio show (Made in Leicester), is a bit different as it was his idea. He used to present a show with John Sinclair on BBC Radio Leicester. When the show ended, he approached Takeover Radio with the concept of a show promoting local musicians. This led to the show ‘Made in Leicester’ which airs on Takeover radio (with Mya presenting and Kevin producing/co-presenting). The show has helped a lot of local artists showcase their talent on radio, thereby enabling them to reach a wider audience.

Mya is a true inspiration to young people. When I met her at a radio promo in June 2013, I was impressed by how she was able to run the entire show all by herself at such a young age. During the radio interview, she asked intelligent questions. Mya had an in-depth knowledge of music which enabled her to properly introduce songs prior to playing them, and she was able to offer constructive critique of songs she featured. A precocious radio presenter – Mya operated the controls and equipment independently.

Sadly, this Saturday (January 25^th 2014) will be Mya’s last appearance on Takeover Radio. Her final live show will air from 16:00 to 18:00. We wish Mya all the best. It has been a pleasure meeting her, and having her interview the Mor Music Group artists.
